How to Fit an F Connector to Coaxial Cable

A DIY Guide for Satellite, Sky TV, and Aerial Setups
If you're setting up a satellite dish, Sky TV box, or a terrestrial aerial, chances are you'll need to fit an F connector to a coaxial cable. While this might sound like a job for a professional installer, it's actually a simple DIY task—especially with guidance from UK radio ham G1YEF on the Ham Radio Tips YouTube channel.

What Is an F Connector?
An F connector is a threaded coaxial RF connector commonly used for TV and satellite signal transmission. It’s designed to screw onto the end of a coaxial cable, providing a secure and shielded connection to devices like satellite receivers, aerial wall plates, and even DAB radios.

Tools You’ll Need
Before you start, gather the following tools:
• A utility knife or coaxial cable stripper
Side cutters or scissors
• A twist-on F connector (compression types are also available but require a crimping tool)

Step-by-Step Installation
1. Prepare the Cable
Begin by cutting the end of the coaxial cable cleanly. Measure about 20mm (nearly an inch) from the end and make a circular incision around the outer sheath using your utility knife. Be careful not to cut too deep—you don’t want to damage the braid underneath.

2. Expose the Braid and Dielectric
Peel back the outer sheath to reveal the braided shielding. Fold the braid back over the sheath. If your cable is double-shielded, you may also need to remove the foil layer to expose the white dielectric insulator.

3. Trim the Dielectric
Carefully cut the dielectric to leave about 3mm of insulation around the central copper conductor. This ensures the connector will seat properly without shorting the signal.

4. Attach the F Connector
Screw the F connector onto the cable, twisting it until the dielectric is flush with the inside of the connector. The central conductor—often called the “stinger”—should protrude about 2mm beyond the end of the connector. If it’s too long, trim it with your cutters.

5. Test the Fit
Once the connector is in place, give it a gentle tug to ensure it’s secure. The connection should be snug, with no wobble or looseness.

Why It Matters
A properly fitted F connector ensures minimal signal loss and interference. Whether you're connecting to a satellite dish or a rooftop aerial, a clean and secure connection is essential for optimal picture and sound quality.

Final Thoughts
Fitting an F connector is a quick and cost-effective way to upgrade or repair your TV setup. With just a few tools and a bit of patience, you can avoid the expense of hiring a technician and gain confidence in your DIY skills. Thanks to Ham Radio Tips and G1YEF’s clear demonstration, even beginners can tackle this task with ease.

Ready to take your home setup to the next level? Grab your tools and give it a go. Your TV signal will thank you.
